First encounter with VR art program Tilt Brush

Wow….just wow…….I just finished my first playing/drawing session in Tilt Brush and it is hard to put in words what an experience that was. Do you remember the really simple program ‘Paint’ that came with Microsoft? It’s sort of like physically stepping into the program, except the program is on drugs except you realize that you are in photoshop but photoshop on drugs but even that doesn’t compare…

After a few (mind blowing) doodles, I looped two circles through each other in space. That’s it. Two circles going through each other…I stepped back, looking in awe at what I was seeing in front of me. It was absolutely and wonderfully overwhelming. It felt like another world just opened up. I think I manically laughed and teared up all at the same time!

I played around switching the different environments and exploring the textures of the brushes. It was incredible. I watched quite a few YouTube videos on drawing in Tilt Brush so I feel I at least had a basic idea on how to use the controls but there is soooo much to explore! So much to learn! The beauty, the potential, the completely new way of experiencing the world around us and the opportunity for self expression! The possibilities are endless!

For my first sketch, I chose the dress form environment. A predictable choice for those that know me but it makes sense. It gives you a much more of a spacial guidance so you can test different brush strokes and how they behave in 3D. You can focus your attention on interacting with the controls and the medium itself and start learning the technique rather then coming up with something brand new from top of your head (pun intended)

IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! I was up and down and had to look completely ridiculous as most people do while in VR. After about an hour, I started getting a little dizzy and nauseous, partially because I am prone to motion sickness…partly from repeatedly going up and down and partly from the adrenaline. I saved my drawing and took the headset off…

Wow. What a surreal feeling to return back to your regular space and an hour of your effort is ‘gone’. Everything around me felt suddenly…plainly ordinary.

…what a unique, addicting experience!
