Tilt Brush is a mind-blowing 3D painting program that offers limitless possibilities and a complete overhaul of how we think about art.
The announcement that the Google developers will no longer be working on Tilt Brush comes on the heels of closing Poly, the 3D object sharing library platform. This means that there will no longer be official updates to the software although you will still be able to purchase the current version of the program.
This disappointing announcement does have a silver lining. The developers made Tilt Brush ‘Open Source’, meaning that anyone can download the code of the program and essentially modify it however they see fit.
In their own words:
“…we want to continue supporting the artists using Tilt Brush by putting it in your hands. This means open sourcing Tilt Brush, allowing everyone to learn how we built the project, and encouraging them to take it in directions that are near and dear to them.”
This is an exciting prospect for many people with coding experience and will most likely result in variety of versions with different functionalities. Many people have already been hard at work adding new brushes and experimenting with different software compatibilities and integrations. Support of a multiplayer function is also high on the list of wanted functions to be able to collaborate on 3D pieces in real time.
If you have coding experience and want to experiment, creating your own version of Tilt Brush, head on over to GitHub to grab the code!
In the meantime, most users will continue using the current version of Tilt Brush for our own enjoyment and watching the VR artists community carefully for upcoming updates on both Tilt Brush development as well as alternatives to Poly!
